The OWHA held a conference call on May 5th to provide the member associations an update on the current situation. In an effort to keep our membership advised of these ongoing updates, we've posted them on our website.
Please click here to see the meeting notes.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Information is subject to change for a variety of reasons. Please watch the OWHA web site. The priority of the OWHA is the health and safety of our members and participants and for all people and we urge everyone to keep themselves informed of the requirements issued and updated by various levels of government and health professionals.
The 2019/2020 hockey season came to a hard stop back in March with the State of Emergency imposed upon all aspects of our lives. We are now two months into the pandemic and we are seeing some positive signs of things returning to normal which is a welcome change.
The OWHA held a briefing this past week and provided an update on the upcoming 2020/2021 season. Unfortunately, at this time there are still many unknowns.
In terms of return to play the FGHA is planning for a 2020/2021 season and will provide updates and information as soon as possible. Registration for the next season is on hold indefinitely until we have more information to provide.
Hockey Canada will direct the return to hockey when they are ready to do so. At this point, we are in a holding pattern as we wait for further updates from Hockey Canada and the OWHA.
The OWHA advised that they will send out a written update in the near future. Once we receive the update we will pass it on to the membership and update the FGHA website.
In regards to the FGHA AGM, this was originally scheduled for May 2nd in conjunction with the awards day.
At this time, should the current restrictions be lifted, we are considering holding the AGM and election of a new board of directors in September 2020.
We will continue to provide updates as they become available. In the meantime, please feel free to contact any current board member should you have questions.
FGHA Board of Directors
The health and well-being of all members of the FGHA community remains our primary concern. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to progress, Hockey Canada and the OWHA continue to provide direction to member associations. On March 16th, the OWHA released a statement regarding spring tryouts.
The full text of the OWHA Statment is below or can be viewed by clicking here.
As you may have seen, the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association (OWHA), issued a statement March 12 in support of the Hockey Canada Statement quoted below referencing the 2019-20 season.
HOCKEY CANADA STATEMENT IN RESPONSE TO CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19)
CALGARY, Alta. – The following is a statement on behalf of Hockey Canada from Tom Renney, chief executive officer, and Scott Smith, president and chief operating officer, on the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
“Without question, this is an unprecedented period of difficulty for the sports world. The health and safety of all participants in sport, including players, coaches, staff, officials, fans, family, volunteers and the general public, is of the utmost importance to Hockey Canada.
After much consultation with the Hockey Canada membership, our chief medical officer and public health officials, the Hockey Canada Board of Directors has made the decision to cancel all Hockey Canada-sanctioned activities, including our national championships, until further notice, effective Friday, March 13, 2020.
We recognize the tremendous effort that has been put forth all year by individuals across the country as they participate in Canada’s game. Although it is difficult to process the hockey season ending abruptly, we feel this is the best course of action in order to do our part in keeping our country safe.”
The health and safety of all participants in the sport is of the utmost importance to the OWHA. As such, tryouts for the 2020-21 season will not be conducted this Spring. Instead the OWHA will provide guidance on when the introduction of the 2020-21 season will begin, subject to the Hockey Canada Board of Directors’ future decision when to reinstate all Hockey Canada-sanctioned activities. Such introduction will take into consideration ice availability, capacity and other logistics involved in organizing hockey programs.
The OWHA will be in direct contact with all members to establish when sanctioned activities can resume.
Further information will follow as it becomes available.
Hockey Canada, as a result of Covid-19, and in support of player and participant safety has cancelled all Hockey Canada sanctioned activities, including National Championships until further notice, effective Friday, March 13, 2020.
All OWHA games, practices, tryouts and sanctioned activities have been cancelled until further notice effective 12:01am on Friday March 13, 2020.

The OWHA appreciates the magnitude of this situation and sincerely thanks the many stakeholders for their support as we all work through the logistics of this cancellation.
